Leon County first in Florida to designates day to recognize families

Special to the Tallahassee Democrat Last week, Leon County Government issued a resolution establishing Florida s first Family Day communitywide holiday to be observed the Friday after Thanksgiving beginning this year. The County invites other organizations, businesses, and institutions to acknowledge the day and honor families at a time when many are together for the holidays.  “Unanimously supported by the Board, Commissioner Brian Welch’s proposal to establish Florida’s first Family Day elevates Leon County’s spirit of community and livability for families of all kinds,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Rick Minor. “All of us who call the Capital County home know it is a great place to raise a family, and now our annual Family Day can help spread the word throughout our region and beyond.”

Lift up local women-owned businesses

Lift up local women-owned businesses | Opinion Janna Lewkow With Florida’s vaccine rollout underway, small businesses can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Female entrepreneurs like myself are anxious to get back to business as usual and resume our key role in the state’s economy.  However, due to COVID, women-led and owned businesses are still suffering. As a female entrepreneur in Tallahassee, I can’t sit on the sidelines and let my fellow lady bosses fail we need to support women entrepreneurs now more than ever. It’s no secret women-owned businesses are an unstoppable driving force in economic growth. According to a recent report, prior to the pandemic women-owned businesses represented 42% of all businesses. Over the past five years the number of women-owned businesses increased by 21%, while all others were up only 9%. My own business, Sweet Southern Shore Boutique, was one that opened its doors during that time.
