State, county unemployment numbers continue to decline

Arizona’s jobless rate dropped two-tenths of a point last month, to 6.7%, as the state continues to recover from the COVID-19 economic slump. In Gila County, the rate dropped from 7.3% to 6.7% last month. New figures from the state Office of Economic Opportunity show the private sector added 15,100 jobs between February and March. But that still leaves employment in non-government jobs nearly 65,000 below where it was a year earlier. The willingness of people to go out is having an effect, with bars and restaurants hiring another 3,700 workers last month. In fact, the most recent figures for Arizona from OpenTable, which tracks seated diners from online, phone and walk-in reservations, are 6.6% higher than they were at the beginning of the pandemic, though Doug Walls, the agency’s labor market information director, pointed out those numbers have been very volatile.

PHOENIX - A significant milestone in COVID-19 pandemic has been reached, as the state s labor force is now larger than it was before the pandemic. No one is saying the economic pain of this pandemic is over, but this news means we’re a lot closer to the finish line. We’ve been going through a growth spurt. We’ve hired employees in the last couple of weeks and we’re looking to hire another three to four positions right now, so things are going well, says Travis Gooden with Plasteel.

SB1411 – not HB2805 – wisely moves Arizona s unemployment system forward – Arizona Capitol Times

SB1411 – not HB2805 – wisely moves Arizona’s unemployment system forward Arizona’s unemployment system needs to be revamped. I introduced SB1411 as a comprehensive package to provide this overhaul after countless hours of collaboration from a diverse stakeholder community, prioritizing information-based policymaking. House members took a different approach. As a result, the actual policy was poorly crafted. As sent to the Senate, the bill is a job killer – HB2805 increases employer taxes seven-fold by flipping the current tax structure upside down, subjecting state unemployment taxes on wages paid in excess of $8,000, instead of up to $8,000.  It provides no relief to those still on the path to recovery, only becoming effective for individuals who go on unemployment for the first-time after the New Year. And HB2805 barely moves the needle, only increasing Arizona’s weekly benefit amount ranking from 49th in the country to 44th.

AZ Jobless Rate Down Slightly; Hope For COVID-19 Recovery Ticks Up

New numbers are out, and Arizona s unemployment rate improved last month as more people in the state are beginning to go out to eat. Full recovery is a long way off, but this a good step.  Arizona s jobs picture is improving, slowly. The adjusted jobless rate dropped two-tenths of a point in March to 6.7%, as the state continues to recover from the COVID-19 economic slump. The good news: People are going out more and that s showing up in new employment. Bars and restaurants hired 3,700 workers last month, according to the state Office of Economic Opportunity. And overall, Arizona businesses added 15,100 jobs between February and March.
