Minnesota is fastest to 100 traffic deaths in six years

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Minnesota has reached 100 traffic deaths and it’s the quickest reaching of that tragic milestone since 2015.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says the state’s 100th traffic death was reported on April 21. The earliest that number was reached in the previous six years was April 27 in 2016.
102 people have died on Minnesota roads since January 1. The same period in 2020 saw 82 traffic deaths.
State officials say those first 100 deaths include:
• 82 motor vehicle occupants compared with 60 reported this time last year.

In a year when grim milestones seem to happen every day, Minnesotans are marking yet another dark day as the state surpassed 100 traffic deaths the earliest date at which this has occurred in six years.

Minnesota recorded its 100th traffic fatality of the year on Wednesday, the earliest the state has seen traffic deaths hit the triple-digit mark since 2016.
Two teenagers died in a crash Thursday night near Alexandria, pushing the statewide total to at least 102 as of Friday morning. That s 20 more deaths than at this time last year, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety s Office of Traffic Safety said.
Speeding and alcohol were factors in 60% of the deaths, according to DPS. Both were believed to have been factors in a fiery crash Sunday night when a driver hit a median outside the Lowry Hill Tunnel and burst into flames inside. Two men in the car died.
