WASHINGTON (Reuters) â U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland asked Congress on Tuesday to provide more funding for investigating and prosecuting domestic terrorism, saying it poses an âacceleratingâ threat that keeps him up at night.
Garland, who had served as a federal appellate judge and federal prosecutor before President Joe Biden nominated him to lead the Justice Department, was testifying about the departmentâs budget request for the 2022 fiscal year.
âWe have a growing fear of domestic violent extremism and domestic terrorism,â Garland told a U.S. House of Representatives budgeting subcommittee. âBoth of those keep me up at night.â

WASHINGTON – Attorney General Merrick Garland asked Congress Tuesday for more than $35 billion in funding for the Justice Department – a 5% increase from last year – including millions of dollars allotted to enforce civil rights, prosecute domestic terrorism, invest in community policing and boost funding for victims of sexual violence.
Among the biggest funding requests are $1.2 billion for community policing, an increase of $304 million from last year, and a historic investment of $1 billion for the Office of Violence Against Women, which provides services to victims of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking.
