‘The Whole World Is Watching’: Chauvin’s Murder Trial Isn’t Just About George Floyd Pilar Melendez, Jared Goyette © Provided by The Daily Beast Mario Tama/Getty While the world watched Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin pin George Floyd to the ground by the knee for more than eight minutes last May, Amity Dimock-Heisler was still awaiting answers about the death of her own child at the hands of Minnesota police. In August 2019, her son, Kobe Dimock-Heisler, was shot six times by two Brooklyn Park police officers responding to a “disturbance call” at his grandparents’ house. The 21-year-old, who was on the autism spectrum and had a history of mental illness, had lost his temper at a local Wendy’s, and he turned his anger on his grandfather, Erwin Heisler, once they returned home, at one point grabbing a paring knife and hammer.

Derek Chauvin trial begins in Minneapolis over the killing of George Floyd

Chauvin trial highlights divide between US city, activists

The tumultuous months that Minneapolis has experienced since ex-police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck as he died last May are coming to a head as the city readies for the commencement of his trial. Jury selection begins on Monday, March 8. While the city has been preparing for months to host the trial in collaboration with local, state, and national law enforcement partners under a plan it is calling Operation Safety Net, local activists and organisers have as well, as they promise to demand justice for Floyd through peaceful protest beginning the morning of jury selection. Community and activist groups are planning a number of events, from pre-protest information and safety training sessions to various actions near the trial’s location in downtown Minneapolis and its capital twin city, St Paul, leading up to March 8 and beyond.

Proposal to replace the police department heads gets preliminary OK from Minneapolis Council

Copy shortlink: A proposal that asks voters to replace the Minneapolis Police Department in the wake of George Floyd s death will head to the City Council for consideration next week. A City Council committee voted 5-1 Thursday to advance the proposal following a discussion about whether it would fulfill promises to increase accountability for police and gather community input as they seek to build a new public safety system. Council Member Linea Palmisano, the lone dissenter on the council s Public Health & Safety Committee, said she feared the latest proposal was too similar to ones that had failed in the past and would only further blur lines of accountability for police.
