This was a tumultuous year for Nevada County on a number of fronts, with COVID-19 causing disruptions in the criminal justice system and causing major changes in how law enforcement handles arrests and detentions. Some would argue, too, that a marked spike in opioid overdose deaths could be linked to COVID. But violent deaths remained big news all year. Here are the top five stories for 2020:

UPDATE: 5:02 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 2020 - The Shasta County Sheriff s Office provided an update on a November 3 shooting in west Cottonwood that left one man dead.
According to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit, they identified that suspects using the alias of “Qufar” and “Pirate” were involved in the shooting death of Isaac Patino. Detectives said they were able to identify “Qufar” as 28-year-old Abdiqafar Mohamud Mohamud, from Seattle, Washington.
A tall, curly haired white male wearing a ball cap and blue jeans and armed with a handgun approached an individual and demanded personal property. The suspect was observed arriving and leaving the area of the crime in the vehicle pictured. If you have any information related to this incident, please contact Det. Cpl.
