What Fitzgerald called Gausse’s Hôtel des Étrangers was of course modeled after the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, a glittering refuge for the one percent since 1870. For 150 years, the property has served as the sun-kissed home away from home for titans of literature (Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Stefan Zweig, Noël Coward), film (Marlene Dietrich, Alain Delon, Elizabeth Taylor, who brought all of her husbands there, and every Hollywood A-lister in town for Cannes), art (Chagall, Picasso, Matisse), music (John and Yoko, Jane and Serge, Ella Fitzgerald), politics (Churchill, De Gaulle, the Kennedys), and high society (Russian aristocrats, the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson).
University of the Sunshine Coast
Scientists at the University of the Sunshine Coast in Australia have found they can quadruple the immune response of farmed fish by adding powdered seaweed to their diet.
The findings from a study, led by PhD candidate Valentin Thépot and supervised by Professor Nick Paul, Dr Alexandra Campbell and Dr Michael Rimmer from the USC Seaweed Research Group, were this week published in the scientific journal Fish and Shellfish Immunology.
The study found that a small amount of a pink seaweed called Asparagopsis, when added to the diet of rabbitfish, resulted in a four-fold improvement on their innate immune response. The same seaweed has been found to reduce methane emissions in cows.

Kicking off our sneak peek at the Features in this week’s issue of “The People’s Friend”, travel writer Willie Shand reflects on his many connections to Kintail.
He has enjoyed many days exploring the fantastic mountainous landscape in the Highlands. We will reminisce with Willie as he takes us back to the time he first saw Dornie Bridge, which was just a single track back then.
We’ll look back, too, on childhood memories of searching for fairies.
Even if you’ve never been to Kintail, you’ll most likely recognise nearby Eilean Donan from pictures on shortbread tins!

Welcome to this week’s “Friend” sneak peek!
Kicking off our brand new issue, beloved travel writer Willie Shand explores the area around Loch Gynack in the Cairngorms National Park.
Kingussie’s memorial gardens are bursting with bright and colourful begonias, and there are plenty of walks to enjoy in these parts.
We will meander past the area’s 18-hole golf course, and enjoy fabulous views of the River Spey.
This is just the place to keep an eye open for birds like red or black grouse, curlews, snipe, merlin and even golden eagles!
