School board talks fall and summer learning plans | Alexandria Times

With Alexandria City Public Schools decreasing distancing to three feet in classrooms on Monday and students with disabilities set to return for four days of in-person learning in May, school staff outlined the much-anticipated summer learning plan during the School Board meeting on April 22. Running from July 6 to July 30, the summer session will involve four days of learning and will be available for all students, with specific priority groups of students targeted for the program. After the four-week summer session, there will be an entirely virtual two-week session from Aug. 2 to 12 to provide additional targeted support for students. According to Terry Werner, ACPS executive director of specialized instruction, staff is taking a “three-tiered approach.”

Rooted in Palestine: Fostering Identity and Advocacy Among Our Youth

About this Event The Museum of the Palestinian People (MPP) is excited to offer this important panel discussion about raising kids in the diaspora. We will introduce parents and families to strategies for building identity and offering kids an environment to embrace, learn, and educate others about their Palestinian heritage. There is no one way to be Palestinian, but being Palestinian can predictively come with certain reactions and we want to give you the tools to handle these moments with your kids. We’ll talk about how to respond to complicated school situations, how to navigate issues you may encounter when talking to your kids about Palestine, and how you can help your kids navigate their own Palestinian identity. We will also have time at the end for audience Q&A!

Tensions Over Virtual and In-Person Education Boil Over in School Board Meeting

Thursday night was not a typical Arlington School Board meeting. A contentious public comment period, during which Board Chair Monique O’Grady called for order multiple times, preceded news that Arlington Public Schools has launched school-based COVID-19 testing and preschoolers will gain access to four days of in-person instruction. Six times, O’Grady addressed violations of the comment period, which included clapping, direct appeals to school board members, and an unseen man shouting down a speaker. She even threatened to “take other measures” if people kept disrupting the proceedings. “We do appreciate hearing from all families, whether you’re happy or not, but we ask you that when you come into our board room that you please respect our rules and one another,” she said later in the meeting, which was preceded by a rally pushing for schools to add more in-person learning days this spring.
