The annual Memorial Day parade in Alexandria is back – and with a new route.
Last year’s event was only aired on TV because COVID-19 restrictions prevented large gatherings.
At its Monday night meeting, the Alexandria City Council issued a special event permit for the parade organizers – the Marine Corps League Detachment 1409 and the Alexandria VFW 936.
Barring any new COVID-19 restrictions, the parade will take place Monday, May 31, from 10 to 11 a.m. Organizer Dave Anderson told the council that even though it s uncertain what will be happening with the pandemic in the next couple of months, they wanted to have a plan in place for the parade.
Big 10 XC champ Bethany Hasz is crushing it this year during Covid-19
By David Monti, @d9monti
(18-Feb) With quiet determination and classic Midwestern grit, Bethany Hasz of the University of Minnesota has methodically climbed through the ranks of distance runners in the NCAA’s Big Ten Conference to reach its top echelon this year. The 23 year-old from Alexandria, Minn., who on January 30, won the individual Big Ten cross country title, is one of only six NCAA women to break nine minutes for 3000m this indoor season, and one of just ten to break 16 minutes for 5000m. Now preparing for her conference indoor championships at the end of February, she is undefeated in four winter race appearances, three on the indoor oval and one on the turf. Hasz, whose twin sister Megan also competes for Minnesota, isn’t getting ahead of herself.

Ellsworth Holm, 88, started his career sitting in an office for a corporate entity in the Twin Cities.
But that wasn’t the lifestyle he wanted.
“I had the best job in the country,” Holm said. “When I changed to working in the office, I was kinda bored. But when I got into teaching, that was my field.”
Holm returned to college and shifted gears to pursue a degree in education so that he could spend the last 30 years of his professional career teaching business in Alexandria. He’s continued to stay involved since retiring in the 1990s and recently donated $25,000 to the Distributive Education Clubs of America, or DECA, Foundation.

Starting Feb. 8, Alexandria Public Schools will begin bringing grades back to full in-person learning as part of a three-phase plan. Grades six and 12 will be the first to come back in full. Written By: Jared Rubado | ×
The Alexandria’s School Board’s COVID-19 Advisory team announced a three-phase plan to get grades 6-12 back into the classroom for full in-person learning starting Feb. 8.
Based on the decreasing local and regional COVID-19 case counts, Alexandria will roll out a one-month plan to bring middle and high school students back to Discovery Middle School and Alexandria Area High School. Students will be required to wear face covering in the schools while maintaining social distancing. Families may opt out of in-person learning for a 100% distance learning option.
