A regional growth plan has been adopted by the 10 municipalities of the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB) following a vote at their May 21 meeting. Cochrane’s town council had voted 5-2 to endorse the growth plan at their meeting four days prior.
Chief administrative officer Mike Derricott called it “the results of an extensive process over the last number of years” and a “significant effort”, citing the collective work of the elected officials on the board, the board’s admin team, the admin teams of the participating municipalities, and those who participated in public engagement.

College of Business student-analysts recently presented the Student Managed Investment Fund (SMIF) annual report to industry professionals during their advisory board spring meeting. The $1 million fund, established through the generosity of alumni, is managed by undergraduate students who are responsible for all investment research, portfolio positions, and reporting.
Since inception, the fund has managed institutional funds through periods of considerable uncertainty trade wars with China, the COVID-19 pandemic, and elections. At present, the SMIF is considerably outperforming the benchmark (CPI + 4%) with annual gains of 37 percent in a market environment that has been, according to Associate Professor of Finance Dr. Bill McCumber, “challenging for the most experienced and thick-skinned professionals.”

Policies regarding how community groups can be funded through the Town of Cochrane have been adjusted.
The new Community Investment Grant Program covers projects, events or capital expenses of local not-for-profits that âenhance and enrich the communityâ.

Initiatives supported through the funding need to cater to a wide segment of the population. Community events & culture manager Kristie Bell offered an example at the last council meeting.
âNon-profit organization âxâ applies for grant funding for an event celebrating youth mental health and community spirit. This would qualify. That same non-profit organization requests funding to provide counseling services for at-risk youth. This would not qualify.â
