(WDBJ) - The U.S. put Johnson and Johnson COVID vaccinations on pause after at least six women, out of more than seven million people vaccinated with the J&J shot, sustained blood clots. Dr. Chad Alvarez with Carilion Clinic said this temporary stoppage proves the safety of American medicine. “This isn’t a recall and is a voluntary pause of the vaccine and I think that in the long run, it’ll be beneficial for everyone,” said Alvarez, Carilion’s senior director of retail pharmacy.

Virginia Will Temporarily Pause J&J Vaccinations

Federal officials said Tuesday they are investigating unusual clots in six women. More than 6.8 million doses of the J&J vaccine have been administered in the U.S., the vast majority with no or mild side effects. Some Local Health Districts Impacted More Than Others The impact of the pause on local health districts varies.  The Richmond City Health District said Tuesday that four upcoming Johnson & Johnson vaccination events are being changed to Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.  Fewer than 750 people were scheduled for those events. The Mount Rogers Health District had planned to administer 1,000 J&J doses at a clinic at Marion High School Saturday.  It now plans to administer Pfizer vaccine.

Race to vaccinate faces hesitancy hurdle in Appalachia

Dr. Karen Shelton watches as cases of COVID-19 begin again to rise in Virginia’s Appalachian counties. She needs more vaccine. And she’ll need more people willing to roll up their sleeves to take it. At the moment, Shelton, who directs public health for everyone living west of the New River Valley, doesn’t have enough doses to meet the demand. Her region was hit especially hard over the fall and winter, with the virus killing more than 800 people. The local hospital system became so overwhelmed that it had to curtail all but critical medical care, create new intensive care units and park morgue trucks outside its flagship hospitals.

Dip in Johnson and Johnson supply won’t stop COVID vaccinations in Roanoke Valley But shortage could cause a slow down after April 18 Tags:  ROANOKE, Va. – Despite a shortage of Johnson and Johnson vaccines nationwide, Roanoke Valley will have plenty of vaccines next week. But changes are on the horizon after entering phase 2. Appointment sign-ups are picking up in Roanoke Valley as 1,000 people who pre-registered from Phase 1a to 1c have already snagged a time slot for next week. But with the state losing 109,000 doses of Johnson and Johnson vaccines next week because of manufacturing issues, Roanoke Valley will receive zero doses.
