Public health officials in the province announced 198 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, with more than half of those coming from the hard-hit Northern Health region.
The northern region accounted for 105 of those new infections in one of the worst days yet as several small and remote communities deal with outbreaks.

The situation up north has prevented public health from lifting any restrictions in the region. The province announced several loosened measures for its four other regional health authorities on Thursday, but left out the north due to escalating numbers and test positivity rates.

The COVID-19 update from the province on Friday saw six additional deaths listed, including a woman in her 90s in the Prairie Mountain Health region from the McCreary/Alonsa Health Centre.
The province reported 154 new cases, as follows: 18 cases in the Interlake–Eastern health region; 70 cases in the Northern health region; eight in the Prairie Mountain Health region; 10 cases in the Southern Health–Santé Sud health region; and 40 cases in the Winnipeg health region.
One case was removed because of a data correction, making the net increase 153 cases.
The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate in Manitoba is 9.5 per cent, and 6.7 per cent in Winnipeg.

The current five-day COVID-19 test positivity rate is 9.2 per cent provincially and 6.6 per cent in Winnipeg. As of 9:30am on January 21, 2021, 198 new cases of the virus have been identified. However, two cases were removed due to a data correction, making the net new cases 196 and the total number of lab-confirmed cases in Manitoba to 28,089.
Public health officials advise five additional deaths in people with COVID-19 have been reported today including:
a female in her 60s from the Northern health region;
a male in his 80s from the Winnipeg health region, linked to the outbreak at Poseidon Care Centre.
