558.
That s the minimum count of how many people, as of this writing, have succumbed to COVID-19 in the greater Capital Region.
In less than 10 months.
That is a wartime number a casualty list perhaps more in keeping with the recounting of Civil War regimental losses than of anything understood in the modern era.
Scientists who study the way the human brain processes big numbers say we’re not very good at it. The larger the number, the less we re likely to feel a strong emotional response to it.
ALBANY, N.Y. â Albany County District Attorney David Soares is urging Gov. Andrew Cuomo to shut down grand jury gatherings as COVID-19 cases surge. I now find myself in the position of having to make the false choice between advocating for victims of crime or continuing to function under conditions exposing our citizens to the COVID-19 pandemic, Soares remarked on being at the crossroad of public health and public safety. With COVID-19 cases at an all-time high in the state, I urge the Governor to re-institute an Executive Order which was in place from March 7 through Oct. 4, which suspended certain sections of the Criminal Procedure Law in order to protect the âhealth and welfareâ of residents of the state, Soares implored of the Governor.

Albany County District Attorney David Soares is calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo to shut down grand jury gatherings, as COVID-19 cases increase across the state.
Over the past month, Soares said five of his staff members tested positive for COVID-19.
“In our office we are taking every single precaution and even in spite of that we’ve been exposed,” Soares said. “And so to me it’s irresponsible and bordering on unethical to then ask citizens to leave their homes and come and provide their services.”
Grand juries meet in panels of at least 23 people to decide whether to bring forward criminal indictments in a case.
