ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The long-term fate of the city’s Juan de Oñate sculpture is still up in the air after the final Albuquerque City Council meeting of 2020.
The council opted Monday not to act on a recommendation that would have permanently changed the La Jornada installation on the Albuquerque Museum grounds. The public artwork had included an Oñate sculpture, but the city temporarily removed the conquistador figure in June after a protest over it turned violent.
The recommendation before the council is that the city not return the Oñate piece and that it re-imagine or “re-contextualize” the larger installation.
