State Senators are considering a bill to provide $30 million in subsidies for attendees of two-year colleges and a pilot program to help college dropouts finish their degrees.
Of that, $26 million would be drawn from the general fund to support students of two-year colleges through the Opportunity Scholarship. The scholarship covers tuition and fees before federal funding is awarded.
Stephanie Rodriguqez, acting secretary of the New Mexico Higher Education Department, says in an op-ed in the Albuquerque Journal that allows students the option to apply other financial aid they receive, such as federal Pell grants, to other expenses that often stand in the way of attaining a degree.

As New Mexico schools got the go-ahead last month from Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham to resume partial in-person teaching beginning Feb. 8, revised re-entry plans have come before districts for debate. The Albuquerque Public Schools Board of Education on Wednesday, Feb. 3, postponed a decision about students going back to the classroom after several hours of discussion. Prior to the board meeting, protesters gathered outside the district s headquarters.
At least 100 APS teachers attended a car rally before Wednesday night’s board meeting, calling for the district to not reopen classrooms until Bernalillo County reaches the “green” level for COVID-19 risk and restrictions, or until all staff who want to can get vaccinated a position in-line with that of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.- Protesters were out at APS headquarters Wednesday, ahead of a School Board meeting that would determine whether the district would offer hybrid learning.
Some teachers and staff do not want to return to the classroom unless Bernalillo County is in the green level of restriction or they are given the opportunity to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
They believe starting in-person learning prematurely could have devastating consequences. We want to be vaccinated or the conditions to be improving, and we re not there yet, said Robert Feuer, who teaches at Highland High School. The district is not there yet. Their HVAC is not updated. Their plan is not well conceived.
