The Johnson & Johnson vaccine clotting issue is fascinating. It’s also, if we’re completely honest about it, a bit frightening.

NEW YORK - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Saturday that city-run vaccination sites will now offer vaccines to anyone over the age of 50 without an appointment.
Previously, the city had only been offering vaccinations without an appointment to residents who were 75 and older. Our priority for the next few months is clear: we need to vaccinate as many New Yorkers as possible, said de Blasio. By making it easier for New Yorkers 50 and older to get vaccinated, we are on our way to fully vaccinating five million New Yorkers by June.

Johnson & Johnson’s COVID-19 vaccine will remain in limbo for a while longer after government health advisers declared Wednesday that they need more evidence to decide if a handful of unusual blood clots were linked to the shot and if so, how big the risk really is. The reports are exceedingly rare six cases out of more than 7 million US inoculations with the one-dose vaccine. But the government recommended a pause in J&J vaccinations this week, not long after European regulators declared that such clots are a rare but possible risk with the AstraZeneca vaccine, a shot made in a similar way but not yet approved for use in the US.
