ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Almost every year, school districts like Albemarle County Public Schools have to make the decision to close schools during inclement weather.
This year, those same decision making processes are now being applied to the district’s continued COVID-19 staged learning response.
“It’s a pretty extensive, comprehensive decision making process using a lot of data, talking to a lot of experts, and then trying to make the best decision you can in advance,” said Phil Giaramita, the district’s strategic communications officer. “It’s the same consideration that drives the adverse weather decisions, that drives the stage decisions, which is health and safety.”

Predictions of snow, rain and ice Wednesday prompted a wave of warnings and schools closures Tuesday, canceling virtual classes and meal delivery programs.
The National Weather Service is predicting snow, rain, sleet and ice to fall across Central Virginia Wednesday. The winter storm warning kicks in at 7 a.m. and is set to expire at 4 a.m. Thursday.
Although virtual classes havenât spelled the end of the fabled snow day in some schools, area school divisions are taking different approaches to snow days this year. Albemarle County and Charlottesville school divisions have called off classes entirely while others suspended online class meetings but told students to work on assignments.
