Soaring ahead

By Allison Marlow When Hayden Kerin finishes his work for the day, he can literally watch his success soar. The Fairhope High School senior spends half of each school day tinkering with instrumentation and learning about aircraft systems. A good day in the classroom means a great day on the tarmac. “I was always interested in airplanes. I thought it would be interesting and fun,” he said of the classes. “When we see something we do flying, it’s very rewarding,” Kerin said. Kerin is one of 31 students who have committed to spending half a day in high school and half in college courses through Baldwin County School’s Fairhope Academy program at the Fairhope Airport. Launched in 2015, the partnership with Coastal Alabama Community College allows Baldwin County high school students to complete the majority of classes needed to earn an associate in applied science degree in airframe technology.

What: Want to purchase a print of “The Last Stand for Mobile” Where: Visit Blakeley State Park guard shack Cost: Poster prints are $12 and 24 x 36 wrapped canvas prints are $100 each By Allison Marlow Officially the painting is known as “The Last Stand for Mobile.” But it could easily instead be titled, “The many faces of Brian.” The painting depicts a very busy behind-the-scenes view of Confederate troops hustling in their fight against approaching Yankees during the Battle of Fort Blakeley in 1865. In the front is a tall man with a long, ruddy, red beard. He looks calm but worried. That man is Brian DesRochers, interpretive ranger at Historic Blakeley State Park, home of the battlefield in Spanish Fort. Look right, there is his again, mid-painting, hollering as the cannon blows.

General Robert E. Lee had surrendered in Virginia hours earlier. As twilight settled on the American Civil War, this meeting of armies at Blakeley – 16,000 Union troops versus 3,500 Confederates – is considered the last major battle of the conflict.

A better life for all – chambers set legislative agenda

Posted By Allison Marlow Increased accessibility to childcare, especially after normal working hours. More affordable housing and mental healthcare facilities. Reliable broadband connectivity. These are among the issues the Baldwin County Chamber Coalition has listed on its 2021 legislative agenda, a slate of concerns that county leaders believe need to be addressed to improve life for all residents. This is the second year the county’s five Chambers of Commerce have worked together to poll members and set one list of priorities for the year. Organizers say the collaboration has helped to carry the county through the trials of 2020. “I believe one thing that has made a tremendous difference is our respective communities and service areas seeing us working together - the ripple effect of witnessing competing entities collaborating for the common good of the whole community can only be a good thing, especially considering the trials and tribulations our area experienced wit
