Allegheny County is “well into our fourth wave of cases here,” Dr. Debra Bogen, health director, said Wednesday. Daily covid-19 case counts have set records for 2021 in the last several days, she said, with 418 new cases reported Wednesday. The test positivity rate is also nearly 9%, and hospitalizations are slowly increasing. Deaths due to covid-19, once on a steady decline since mid-December, began to increase again the week of March 21, Bogen said.

Pittsburgh Hit By Fourth Wave of Cases, Mass Vaccination Clinics Announced

Courtesy of UPMC Two of the region’s largest health care providers have announced dates for two-day mass vaccination clinics for individuals who fall within the state’s phase 1A and 1B categories. Allegheny Health Network and UPMC will vaccinate about 25,000 people at the separate clinics with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. Allegheny Health Network has partnered with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, the Pennsylvania National Guard and the Allegheny County Health Department to stand up a two-day clinic at the Next Tier Connect office building in Monroeville Friday and Saturday. The clinic will be able to vaccinate 13,000 eligible individuals with the one-shot Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Those eligible and interested in receiving the vaccine can visit AHN’s website or call 412-DOCTORS to schedule an appointment. No walk-in appointments will be accepted.

Tom Wolf is right that the vaccine is winning in a race against the fourth wave of COVID-19 infections, that race is a very close one in Allegheny County. Wolf was in McKeesport Wednesday to visit Bethlehem Baptist Church, where the Allegheny County Health Department will open a vaccination clinic on Monday. He also defended the state’s decision to ease pandemic restrictions as the number of infections was rising. Nearly half of new coronavirus infections nationwide are in just five states New York, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, according to Johns Hopkins University.
