UPMC Mercy’s South Side Outpatient Center sat dormant and quiet for about a year before it became the epicenter of some of the health care system’s covid-19 programs.
The focus of the Mary Street site has evolved since the pandemic began, concentrating on testing first with a UPMC-developed test and then with commercially available tests. As vaccines became available, the clinic expanded to offer mass vaccinations.

When it comes to the number of COVID-19 vaccinations administered in Allegheny County, senior citizens lead the way.
According to Allegheny County Health Director Dr. Debra Bogen, 94% of county residents aged 65 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine. The percentage drops to 68% among those 50-64 and 60% for those in the 39-49 age group. Of those 20-38, 49% have gotten at least one dose, and the percentage drops to 25% for teenagers aged 16-19.
“But the work is not done, and I believe we can and will do better,” she said during a virtual news conference Wednesday.
Allegheny County is considering the concept for some of its summer events.

“Vaccinated? Let me show you to your seat.” That could be the future greeting by ushers at various Allegheny venues this summer.
Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald wants sports and entertainment venues to create special sections for vaccinated spectators. He says it’s something the county is already considering for its summer concert series at Hartwood Acres and South Park.
“I would encourage all of our sports teams, all of our venues, theaters, the opera, the symphony, the Playhouse, etc., to go ahead and think about the same thing,” he said during a virtual news briefing Wednesday.
