Monongahela River pollution update: Union Township says wrongful termination suit is purview of West Elizabeth Sanitary Authority

Monongahela River PITTSBURGH – A wrongful termination suit from a man who claims he was fired from a water and sewer authority when he refused to dump raw sewage into the Monongahela River is the burden of the West Elizabeth Sanitary Authority, according to Union Township. Perry Payne first filed suit in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas on Aug. 11 versus West Elizabeth Sanitary Authority and West Elizabeth Borough, Union Township of Finleyville and the Borough of Jefferson Hills. “Plaintiff began working for WESA in June 2013. In September 2019, WESA was in the process of trying to get a new processing treatment plant online. Around this time, the old plant was still online and it developed a processing issue. Plaintiff did everything he could to address and correct this processing issue, but it continued until about mid-January 2020,” Payne said.

Nursing home ex-admin update: Facility says fired plaintiff did not engage in legally protected activity

Adobe Stock PITTSBURGH – A Monroeville nursing home facility says that a former administrator who reported positive COVID-19 diagnoses at the facility to both county and state health authorities – and believes he was fired in retaliation – did not show he engaged in protected activity under the Pennsylvania Whistleblower Act. Ron Berlingo of Greensburg first filed suit in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas on Aug. 24 versus Monroeville Operations, LLC (doing business as “Monroeville Rehabilitation and Wellness Center”), of Monroeville. “Berlingo began employment at The Grove in Irwin on July 30, 2019 as a nursing home administrator. He was assigned to the defendant’s Monroeville Rehab and Wellness Center in or around September 2019 in the same position. The Center is a long-term care facility. Berlingo performed his job throughout his employment with defendant without receiving any formal discipline,” the suit said.

Covid-19 vaccinations will start at long-term care facilities in Pennsylvania next week

Pharmacy workers from CVS Health will begin administering the covid-19 vaccine to residents and staff members in 2,283 skilled nursing and assisted living facilities in Pennsylvania starting Monday, Dec. 28. The Pfizer vaccine is being distributed under a phased plan starting with health care workers and residents and staff members of long-term care facilities. CVS Health is one of two providers selected by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to administer covid-19 vaccinations. The other is Walgreens. States set to receive the first facility vaccinations, which begin this week, are Connecticut, Florida, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon and Vermont.

There have been 47,111 cases since the outbreak began in March, up from 45,699 reported on Saturday. There were three new coronavirus deaths. The county death toll now stands at 780, up from 777 on Saturday. The 1,155 confirmed cases came from 2,036 new tests - a positivity rate of 56 percent.
