Students who attended schools operated by the defunct Education Corporation of America will have their private student loans canceled.
Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced an agreement on Tuesday that will result in the cancellation of about $2.6 million in private Pennsylvania student loans for 1,300 students who attended schools operated by Education Corporation of America.
ECA operated five former Brightwood Career Institute locations in Pennsylvania, including a Pittsburgh site that abruptly closed in 2018. Education Corporation of America lost its accreditation and failed to meet federal Education Department financial requirements, causing them to close their Pittsburgh location, along with campuses in Philadelphia, Broomall and Harrisburg.

PITTSBURGH (AP) A man has pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the deaths of two men authorities say he fought with and whose bodies were found after a Pittsburgh house fire more than three years ago.
Court documents indicate that 61-year-old Vincent Smith also pleaded guilty Monday in Allegheny County Court to four counts of arson-endangering persons in connection with the February 2018 blaze in the Point Breeze neighborhood.
Other charges including aggravated arson and abuse of a corpse were withdrawn as part of a plea agreement. The Allegheny County district attorney’s office said there was no agreement in place on sentencing, which has been scheduled for June 30.

ALLEGHENY - The Director of Nursing at the Jewish Association on Aging Weinberg Villages wants payback from PJ Dick Incorporated and Flooring Contractors of Pittsburgh after she says she fell on a loose piece of flooring left at a recently renovated site.
According to documents filed in March in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas, plaintiff Deborah A. McDonald was walking in the newly refloored Arbor Unit of the Weinberg Village. The defendants were responsible for the contracting and flooring of the unit, and allegedly left an extra piece of tile on the floor.
