Once Christmas is over, that tree in the living room goes from a way of remembering the holiday to “All right, how are we going to get rid of this thing?”
If you live in Allegheny or Westmoreland counties, you don’t have to look far to dispose of your tree and also to help additional trees grow.
Both counties have a multitude of sites for Christmas tree recycling. Last year, Allegheny County Parks Department workers turned about 3,500 trees into mulch. Considering that one live tree makes about five pounds of mulch, that’s more than eight tons of mulch ready to be spread around come spring.

Celebrating the holiday together has been far from easy this year, but Allegheny County’s Parks Department is up to the challenge.
The Holiday Laser Show, created by North Carolina-based Emerald Owl Productions, is set to music ranging from Bing Crosby’s soothing Christmas classics to the raucous rock tunes of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The 45-minute show, with audience members parked in the lot of the North Park Swimming Pool, is a welcome addition and it could become a local holiday tradition.

The Allegheny County Parks Department is the latest entity to announce operational changes after Gov. Tom Wolf this week issued new orders to help curb the spread of covid-19.
According to the parks department, all indoor facility rentals and sports and fitness programs including flag football, hockey leagues, hockey lessons and ice-skating lessons are canceled Saturday through Sunday, Jan. 3.
Full refunds will be issued for canceled facility rentals and programs.
Ice rinks at North Park and South Park will remain open, but their operations will be modified. Changes at the ice rinks include permitting only 50 skaters per session and closing rink buildings, including indoor restrooms. Portable toilets, lockers and benches will be provided outside.
