Breeze Airways, which launched today, is bringing nonstop flights to Hartford, Connecticut, and Providence, Rhode Island, two cities not currently served out of Pittsburgh International Airport. The airline also will offer nonstop service to Charleston, South Carolina (also served by Allegiant and United) and Norfolk, Virginia (also served by Allegiant). “The fact that Breeze selected Pittsburgh as one of its initial markets to launch flights is a testament to our strong regional economy and demand for air service as we rebound from the pandemic,” Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said in a statement.

Pittsburgh International Airport will introduce four new nonstop flights to cities along the East Coast as Breeze Airways, a new airline started by JetBlue’s founder, sets up shop in Western Pennsylvania. The airline will offer nonstop flights to Hartford, Conn.; Providence, R.I.; Norfolk, Va.; and Charleston, S.C. They will be the first nonstop flights from Pittsburgh to Providence and Hartford. Airport officials announced the news this week on Blue Sky, the airport’s in-house online news site.

Tom Wolf announced state grant funding, which will be directed to 12 airports, on May 12. The grants were issued through PennDOT’s Aviation Transportation Assistance Program, which directs dollars from the state’s General Fund to public-use airports for improving aviation infrastructure. “Aviation plays a vital role in keeping our state’s economy moving,” Wolf said. “These investments will help Pennsylvania’s airports operate safely, expand to meet current demands and sustain growth well into the future.”

Pittsburgh International Airport’s cargo amenities and Arnold Palmer Regional Airport’s passenger terminal got a boost Wednesday from PennDOT grants totaling more than $2.8 million. The bulk of the funding, $2.4 million, will assist the Allegheny County Airport Authority’s plan to develop expanded air cargo facilities at Pittsburgh International, including buildings and access for aircraft and vehicles.
