UFU welcomes long overdue bovine TB eradication strategy

July 16, 2021 7:51 pm The Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) has said welcomed the launch of the new bovine TB Eradication Strategy for Northern Ireland is a “step in the right direction”. The strategy sets out a number of proposals, including asks for the industry such as improved biosecurity measures but also proposes radical changes to movement restrictions to ease cash flow and overstocking issues on farms which have been closed for extended periods. The document includes proposals for wildlife intervention in the form of a badger cull – something the UFU has been calling for for some time. A UFU spokesman said the strategy was “long overdue” and added that the union will take time to scrutinise the document in full before commenting on its contents.

Poots outlines proposals to eradicate Bovine TB in Northern Ireland

Minister Poots has launched his consultation document aimed at tackling Bovine TB Launching a consultation document at CAFRE’s Greenmount campus on the Department’s proposed implementation and next steps of a bTB Eradication Strategy for NI, Minister Poots said: “I recognise the challenges that face all of us due to the current high TB incidence. It is the source of significant stress for our farming families and has the potential to inflict serious damage on the wider agri-food industry and its ability to trade on a global scale. “The proposals outlined in the consultation document are based on the experience and evidence from other jurisdictions; and on solid scientific research. I want to hear the views of all our stakeholders. I will then consider the responses and weigh those up against the evidence and information available, only then will I make a final decision on the way forward.”

Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots has started a public consultation in which he has outlined a series of measures. The disease costs the taxpayer up to £40m a year and Mr Poots said the plans were far-reaching and based on science. Doing nothing is not an option, he said. He opened the consultation at the Greenmount campus of the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise.
