Meharry lands $750K grant for business incubator

Meharry Medical College has received a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to expand a seed-stage business incubator launched last year in the historically Black medical school’s Center for the Study of Social Determinants of Health. ResilienSEED is a program aimed at helping vulnerable populations of diverse backgrounds develop businesses that address social inequities in their communities. The incubator provides investment capital, research and tech support, mentorships and a network of entrepreneurs to work with, bolstered by a partnership with Frist Cressey Ventures. “It’s an idea for how we can provide resources to underserved communities that are having a fair amount of hardship in term of disparities, not only in economics but also in just the business numbers,” Bryan Heckman, founding director of Meharry’s Center for the Study of Social Determinants of Health, told the

Apr 28, 2021 YOUNGSTOWN The Youngstown Business Incubator is part of a northeast Ohio regional partnership awarded $703,378 to improve the recovery and resiliency of the local economy hurt by the viral pandemic. Resilient NEO a partnership that also includes the Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network (MAGNET), JumpStart and Team NEO is among 44 organizations sharing $29 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration and its Scaling Pandemic Resilience Through Innovation and Technology (SPRINT) Challenge. The money will be spent over the next 18 months to enhance innovation capacity in seven counties in northeast Ohio, including Trumbull and Mahoning counties, by facilitating connection between industries, “thereby promoting innovation, and advancing ‘smart’ manufacturing, creating the conditions to produce these new innovations at scale,” according to a project description.
