State higher ed funding flat thanks to federal stimulus influx

Jeff Greenberg/Contributor/Getty Images With the help of nearly $2 billion in federal COVID-19 relief funding, state funding allocations for higher education during the 2021 fiscal year remained roughly the same as last fiscal year, according to the latest Grapevine higher education funding report. Total state support for higher education edged up by 0.3 percent to $96.7 billion in the 2021 fiscal year, which began July 1, 2020, and will end on June 30, 2021. Without federal dollars, direct state funding levels would have declined by 1.3 percent this fiscal year. “The results suggest that budgets have not been wrecked to the extent we feared they might be by the pandemic,” said Jim Applegate, visiting professor at Illinois State University s Center for the Study of Education Policy and editor of the Grapevine report. “Part of the reason for that is the federal government did step up.”

Immediate steps needed for Michigan students educational recovery

Yet, some in Michigan say less state funding should be invested in high-poverty and working-class districts because they are getting so much support from federal COVID relief funding. They argue that state leaders should instead invest more in affluent districts to make up for that support. But that would be shortsighted, harming those students that evidence suggests have been the most impacted during this crisis.  Indeed, now is the time to drive critical resources and supports to students that have long been underserved to avoid worsening gaps and shortchanging their futures, as well as the full economic recovery our state.

Fremont Public Schools could receive $3 million in additional federal funding this spring

The scope for a 2021 bond issue would be larger than any previous bond issue that the district has brought to the public before. Hypothetical bond issue scenarios brought forward to the FPS Board of Education range from $96 million to $146 million. Noah Johnson Fremont Public Schools could receive up to $3 million from the second round of federal COVID-19 relief funds later this spring. The money could go toward several projects, such as providing technology to round out the district’s 1:1 initiative to completing various air quality projects in buildings across the area, according to Associate Superintendent Brad Dahl. It’s the second round of federal funding the district has received in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, FPS received around $871,000 to address COVID-19-related issues through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act passed last March.
