The Saskatoon Fire Department says, after months of action to improve living conditions at 1416, 20th Street West, it was left with no other option than to close the entire building known as Prairie Heights.
Assistant Chief Yvonne Raymer says, “Despite our efforts to ensure the building was safe, clean and not a fire hazard, we cannot get ahead of the constant vandalism, squatting, drug trade, risky and unhealthy behaviours.” She says they cannot allow people to live in the building until significant changes are made.
The latest inspection of the building revealed a water leak that is starting to seep through drywall and water pooling in the elevator shaft.

The Village of Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories, updated community members on evacuation plans in case of spring flooding, in a news release Tuesday afternoon.
Fort Simpson Mayor Sean Whelly was at a Fort Simpson flood planning meeting earlier Tuesday with territorial government officials. Prior to that meeting Whelly expressed frustration with
Yellowknife is dealing with a cluster of COVID-19 cases in the community. Whelly earlier said that a mass relocation of evacuees to the city didn t make sense in light of the outbreak.

Manitoba Infrastructure’s Emergency Measures Organization (EMO) is reminding Manitobans the National Public Alerting System, Alert Ready, is scheduled to issue an emergency test message on multiple communication channels tomorrow, Wednesday, May 5 at 1:55 p.m. CST.
Testing of all components is an important and necessary part of any public alerting system. It provides an opportunity to validate and improve the end-to-end performance and reliability of the system to ensure it operates as it is intended on TV, radio and wireless. Test alerts also educate the public on what an emergency alert will look and sound like in the event of a life-threating situation.
