When the coronavirus pandemic hit last year, Ellen Wormser’s work as a nurse-midwife for Fair Haven Community Health Care, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Connecticut, changed significantly.
Gone were the sort of family scenes that Wormser said she was accustomed to seeing in delivery rooms before COVID-19, when women giving birth often had a number of people cheering them on. Wormser said she saw many of her colleagues don PPE to assist COVID-positive women in labor, often spending hours face-to-face with them.
“I was scared for all of us but everybody went and did their job,” Wormser said. “We were so anxiously awaiting a vaccine because we knew that that would turn the corner in allowing patients to come in and get the care that they need.”

ANN ARBOR – In March 2020, our collective lives changed forever.
Schools, restaurants, stores and libraries closed. Daily life began to feel like a redundant routine and between scrambling to purchase hand sanitizer and figuring out how to work remotely, many were trying to find a way to navigate this new normal. Some still are.
At the University of Michigan, the pause was equally jarring, new and confusing. College is a time to socialize and for many 18-year-olds, is the first time they are living away from home. Connection with others is crucial to the college experience, and students were having to come to grips with classes on computer screens and very little human interaction overnight.

Yale juniors Alie Brussel Faria and Eli Sabin are among 62 college students nationwide selected as 2021 Truman Scholars. The scholarship is the premiere graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States. It provides funding for graduate studies, leadership training, career counseling, and special internship and fellowship opportunities within the federal government.
Faria and Sabin were selected from 845 candidates nominated by 328 colleges and universities a record number of applicants.
