Flagler County Emergency Management does more than encourage residents to get their affairs in order at the start of hurricane season, it has its own catalog of preparations to complete to ensure it’s ready to keep the community safe in the event of a named storm.
“Being prepared isn’t just something we talk about and ask our residents to do,” said Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord. “As an agency, it’s something we take very seriously. We do everything we can to make sure we are ready to support our community.”

It’s been nearly three years since Flagler County rolled out its free, fine-tuned, and upgraded ALERTFlagler emergency notification system to protect residents and businesses through public safety alerts, and now officials are urging all to update their information – ahead of the need.
In addition to providing information such as severe weather notifications, and protective measures such evacuations and unexpected road closures, enrollees can opt in for notifications about missing children and endangered adults.

Temporary help is on the way that will cover some of the costs of broadband for qualifying low-income households through the Federal Communications Commission Emergency Broadband Benefit Program.
The FCC announced that residents can begin applying for and enrolling in the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program on Wednesday, May 12.
“Flagler County isn’t actually involved outside of letting our residents know the program is available,” said Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord. “There are criteria that have to be met, but it’s a great program for those who are eligible.”

Flagler County is encouraging residents and businesses to make preparations through National Hurricane Preparedness Week, which is May 9 through 15.
“We are less than a month away from the June 1 start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season,” said Emergency Management Director Jonathan Lord. “While the majority of Atlantic hurricanes occur between August and October, hurricanes can occur at any time during the season – and sometimes outside of hurricane season.”
