Why We Should Pass the Damn COVID Relief Bill Now

Why We Should Pass the Damn COVID Relief Bill Now | Opinion On 2/21/21 at 7:00 AM EST I m not sure anyone wants to hear more about Texas Senator Ted Cruz and his Cancún winter break. But just indulge me. Basically, the moral of the story is this: lawmakers like Cruz and Texas Governor Greg Abbott have forgotten what their job is really about. My little case study: during my first reporting job in the 70s, I was assigned to cover a meeting held by the late Mendel Davis in a recreation center in downtown Beaufort, South Carolina. Davis was seated up front in the hall, flanked by a couple of staffers at what looked like a folding party table. Person after person would approach Davis and asked about things like help with late social security checks and fixing potholes on the federal highway. Davis spent hours at that table; his staff would scribble everything down, take phone numbers and promise to get back. The Mendel Davis rule of governing? Be there for your

Decade of Difference: Dr John

It is hard to think about Mardi Gras in New Orleans without thinking of Dr. John. Malcolm John Rebbenack’s association with the city and music goes all the way back to his childhood. Born in New Orleans, Rebbenack’s father owned an appliance store that also sold records and John soon developed a love for the classic jazz artists. He began taking music lessons as a teen and after meeting Professor Longhair as a teen settled on a career as a musician. Rebbenack moved to LA and found session work in the 60’s. Becoming fascinated with the legends of New Orleans voodoo, he invented his stage persona, Dr John Creaux the Night Tripper complete with over the top costumes and trippy songs.

The Modern Drummer Festival 2020 - Modern Drummer Magazine

Modern Drummer Magazine A Celebration and Tribute to the Life and Legacy of Neil Peart Modern Drummer had been planning to bring back the world-renowned MD festival in 2020, and we were ready to put the plan into action. Then the world stopped due to COVID-19. After many discussions, we decided that instead of canceling the festival, we would change formats and produce a pay-per-view show. That would allow anyone to watch it on their TV, computer, or mobile device. The date we chose was September 12th, which is the late/great Neil Peart’s birthday. We also decided to combine the show with a tribute to the Professor, who left us much too soon on January 7.Reaching out to drummers to appear was the next step. With everyone being such a huge fan of Neil, the lineup for our special tribute festival filled up almost instantly. We collaborated with Neil’s wife, Carrie, to donate the proceeds from the show to brain cancer research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The Year in Review, 2020: the year without concert reviews

by Steve Newton on December 23rd, 2020 at 3:00 PM 1 of 5 2 of 5 Looking back on 2020, the year of COVID-19, the worst thing about it was obviously the loss of life. While I m writing this the worldwide death toll is 1,663,097. While you re reading it it s undoubtedly much, much higher. Don t bother checking. It s too depressing. Then there s the whole economic catastrophe that the pandemic has caused. Billions and billions of dollars lost. Maybe trillions. Countless businesses destroyed and jobs lost. All in all, not a lotta fun on the financial front. Somehow, though, by the grace of god or whoever s in charge, the lucky among us survived. I managed to avoid contracting the disease, and whether having that catchy old Bee Gees tune Stayin Alive stuck in my head 24/7 helped or not, who s to know.
