The Duke of Edinburgh has died, Buckingham Palace has announced.
One question that many have is why Prince Philip was not king, despite being married to the Queen.
Why was Prince Philip not king?
Prince Philip and Queen Elizabeth II married a Westminster Abbey on 20th November 1947. When the now-monarch’s father King George VI passed away in 1952, she ascended to the British throne and became the Queen.
Not only did her role within the royal family change, but it also meant that Prince Philip became the Prince Consort.
But why was Prince Philip not King?
When he married Elizabeth, he dropped his title as Prince of Greece and Denmark and became the Duke of Edinburgh. He did not become King when his wife took the throne due to a royal rule which states that a man who marries a reigning Queen will be known as the Prince Consort.

Prince Philip has died “peacefully” at the age of 99.
Buckingham Palace announced on Friday 9 April that the Queen’s husband had died at Windsor Castle earlier that day.
In statement, Buckingham palace tweeted: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
“His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.”
Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and Queen Elizabeth II were married for 73 years, having wed on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey.

Earlier today, April 9, Arthur J. LeBlanc, Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia, received official word from the administrator of the Government of Canada in Ottawa confirming the passing of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, consort of Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada.
“It is with profound sadness that Mrs. LeBlanc and I learned of the passing of His Royal Highness,” said Lt.-Gov. LeBlanc. “Prince Philip lived a long and remarkable life that was characterized by duty and service. He will be long remembered for his support to many charities and organizations, in particular his creation of the Duke of Edinburgh Award program. It encouraged youth around the world, including thousands of Nova Scotian youth, to develop themselves through personal discovery and growth, self-reliance, perseverance and responsibility. On behalf of all Nova Scotians, I have written to Her Majesty the Queen to convey our deepest sympathy to her
