LONDON (Reuters): Prince Philip, husband of Queen Elizabeth and a leading figure in the British royal family for almost seven decades, has died aged 99, Buckingham Palace said on Friday (April 9).
The Duke of Edinburgh, as he was officially known, had been by his wife s side throughout her 69-year reign, the longest in British history, during which time he earned a reputation for a tough, no-nonsense attitude and a propensity for occasional gaffes. It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the palace said in a statement.

Buckingham Palace has announced today that Prince Philip has sadly died, aged 99.
Announcing the news via Twitter, a statement from the palace read:
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.

The Duke of Edinburgh passed away peacefully just two months before his 100th birthday, sending Britain into mourning.
The prince was at Windsor Castle when he died this morning and Queen Elizabeth II was also in residence.

Newsweek: It s very sad news. Has it come as a shock? I think the fact that Prince Philip was in hospital for a month and then came out, I think we were all hoping he would make a full speedy recovery.

A statement released today from Buckingham Palace confirmed that the 99-year-old had passed away.
The Duke of Edinburgh had been in the King Edward VII s Hospital in Central London since February 16, but was discharged on March 16.
In the statement, Buckingham Palace said: It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
