Buckingham Palace announced the sad news in a statement at midday today (April 9) It said: “It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. “His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle. “Further announcements will made in due course. “The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.” HM Lord- Lieutenant for Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensman said:“This is a day of great sadness as we mourn the death of The Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip, until his retirement from most public engagements at the remarkable age of 96, was the mainstay of our Royal Family and we can be very grateful for his enduring and positive influence on our national life.

Reacting to the demise of the Duke of Edinburgh, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that Prince Philip lived an extraordinary life as a naval hero in the Second World War, as the man who inspired countless young people. Our thoughts are with Her Majesty and her family, who have lost not just a much-loved and highly respected public figure, but a devoted husband and a proud and loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, UK PM said in a statement.
Irish premier pays tribute to Philip

Irish premier Micheal Martin has led tributes to the Duke of Edinburgh.
Philip died at the age of 99, Buckingham Palace announced on Friday.
The Taoiseach was among a number of Irish politicians to express their condolences after his death.
Mr Martin said: “Saddened to hear of the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Sincere condolences to Queen Elizabeth and family on the death of her husband Prince Phillip. Sympathies to those of a British identity on our island, for whom his death will be felt as a great loss. Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis.
A virtual book of condolence is also to be opened. Kevin O’Keefe, chief executive of the council, said: We are greatly saddened to hear of the death of the Duke of Edinburgh and on behalf of myself and the people of Dudley borough I would like to send sincere condolences to the royal family at this time. The Duke of Edinburgh served as Queen’s consort for 70 years, dedicating his life to public service and the borough is privileged to have welcomed the Duke of Edinburgh on two occasions during the Duke’s lifetime. He first visited with the Queen in 1957 as part of a tour of Staffordshire and Worcestershire and in 1977 as part of the celebrations to mark the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.
