Fireworks in this unpredictable environment is just too much of a risk for us to allow, Stackhouse says.

Source: New Zealand Police (District News) Police is continuing to assist Fire and Emergency New Zealand following a scrub fire on the Port Hills overnight. Emergency services were called to the area shortly after 11pm. Around 40 houses were evacuated overnight on Port Hills Road, Avoca Valley Road and Gilders Grove. Port Hills Road remains closed, however all residents that were evacuated are now able to return to their homes. Enquiries into the circumstances of the fire are ongoing, however Police do not believe there is any link to the vegetation fires which occurred in the Port Hills in the early hours of Wednesday 9 December.

People have been evacuated from Avoca Valley Road and Port Hills Road after a fire began spreading in the area overnight. Civil Defence is now co-ordinating accommodation at St Martin s School Hall for any evacuees who need assistance. Around 5.30am Fire and Emergency said it was continuing to work on the scrub fire. It said it is estimated that the fire has burnt through around 15 hectares, since they were first called at about 11.10pm last night.
