Australia has booted another Aswan Shipping bulk carrier from its ports for serious deficiencies related to vessel maintenance and sub-standard working and living conditions for its crew.
The 36-month ban of the Panama-flagged M/V Maryam comes after one of the longest detentions of a foreign ship in Australian waters, according to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).
“This is unprecedented,” the AMSA said.
Maryam was detained in Port Kembla on 19 February 2021 for numerous deficiencies including issues with its safety equipment and inoperative electricity generators.
Not only was the ship deemed to be unseaworthy, but the living conditions on board were in breach of the Maritime Labour Convention, with no electricity, no running water, no sanitary facilities and no ventilation – making conditions unbearable for the seafarers onboard, according to the AMSA.

A Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier has been banned from Australian ports over appalling working and living conditions on board, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said.
The 235-meter Movers 3, operated by Qatari-based Aswan Shipping, was detained at anchor off Weipa in far north Queensland on March 4, 2021 due to several mechanical and survey issues, and for the poor conditions on board. Outstanding issues, namely the replacement of poorly maintained ballast tank head vents and the updated ship surveys, were resolved after a lengthy port State control detention AMSA said.
On April 29, AMSA released Movers 3 from detention and immediately issued it with a ban, prohibiting it from entering an Australian port for 18 months.

Clarification: Cape & Torres News article regarding bulk carrier Movers 3
The Maritime Union of Australia wishes to clarify a number of points contained in an article that appeared in the Cape & Torres News regarding the bulk carrier Movers 3, which has been banned from all Australian ports for 18 months by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority after being detained in Weipa for two months.
The article incorrectly identified Sarah Maguire as “MUA Queensland Inspector”. Ms Maguire is an Australian inspector for the International Transport Workers’ Federation.
The article also suggested that Rio Tinto was responsible for the chartering of the Movers 3, which is operated by Aswan Shipping. The bulk carrier is not part of Rio Tinto’s supply chain and was instead chartered by one of the mining company’s customers to transport bauxite from Australian to China.
