The Defense Department has identified hypersonics as one of the highest priority modernization areas, as Russia and China develop their own capable systems. Hypersonic systems are able to travel on extended flights within the upper atmosphere – 80,000 to 200,000 feet – at speeds near and above Mach 5, and they’re able to maneuver in ways that are hard for defenders to predict. The high-altitude range creates a gap between air defenses and ballistic missile defenses, said Mike White, principal director for hypersonics in the office of the undersecretary of defense for research and engineering.

Why the Air Force Worries About Long-Term Commitment Missile Plans

Why the Air Force Worries About Long-Term Commitment Missile Plans Several senior Air Force leaders have expressed growing concern about a potential “missile gap” occurring prior to the arrival of larger numbers of Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent. The Air Force is planning to operate its newly emerging Ground-Based Strategic Deterrent (GBSD) intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) for decades well into the 2080s, with the understanding that technological advances and threat circumstances are likely to evolve substantially in coming years, requiring needed adaptations to the weapons system. A key area of emphasis for these kinds of technical circumstances, over the course of many years now, is for the military services to upgrade hardware with advanced new software and computer algorithms designed to respond to and incorporate new threats as they emerge.

The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center s Armament Directorate issued a statement on Friday noting that the first booster test flight (BTF-1) of the AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon known as ARRW will take place within a month, following unexplained delays. The test had been due to happen last week, and before that was scheduled for some time in December 2020. The Air Force did not say specifically why the launch had been repeatedly pushed back, though cited technical findings and the COVID-19 pandemic as factors.
