N. Korean threat persists amid continued pursuit of weapons: USFK commander

SEOUL/WASHINGTON, March 11 (Yonhap) North Korea continues to pose a serious threat to the United States and its ally South Korea as Pyongyang pursues a nuclear arsenal and other weapons of mass destruction, the commander of U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) has said.
Gen. Robert Abrams also said Wednesday that the U.S. troops in Korea stand ready to defend South Korea from any threat, noting that the U.S. will deploy two additional specific anti-ballistic missile capabilities in South Korea this year.
Bombers flew overhead. Tracers were visible in the night sky. Explosions sounded in the distance.
Staff Sgt. Renee Kelly stayed on alert Feb. 24, 1991, off main supply route Dodge near the Iraqi border. She was a Hawk missile launcher repairer in the 34th Ordnance Company, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade under the 18th Airborne Corps.
In January the Soldiers had moved up along the Iraqi border from their temporary staging area, an old cement factory called Cement City. Kelly left Redstone Arsenal in September 1990 and joined the brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas. They arrived that Oct. 23 in Saudi Arabia.
Their Hawk air defense system maintenance company had a direct support role when the 100-hour ground war began Feb. 24.

FORT SILL, Okla. (TNN) - Fort Sill has released the identity of a soldier who was found dead on the Post on Saturday.
The soldier has been identified as Private Second Class Maverick McDowell.
According to officials, McDowell was found unresponsive in his quarters on Saturday. He was assigned tot he 30th Air Defense Artillery Brigade and has been on Fort Sill since November 2020.
âWe are heartbroken by the tragic loss of one of our Fort Sill teammates. We send our deepest condolences to PV2 McDowellâs family, friends and fellow Soldiers,â said Maj. Gen Ken Kamper, Commanding General of the Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill.
