Article content Is a huge expansion of the long-term care sector really what Ontario seniors need? Some experts and advocates are questioning the need for more institutional care for the elderly, and the idea of a better way seems appealing given the death toll and poor performance of the sector during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Ontario government is firmly committed to the long-term care (LTC) model, with an ambitious plan to make the sector bigger and better, and to increase the level of care. The government has already committed $2.68 billion to renovate and expand LTC homes. It also has also promised $4.9 billion to increase direct nursing or personal support care to four hours a day, the highest level in the country.
