Is a huge expansion of the long-term care sector really what Ontario seniors need? Some experts and advocates are questioning the need for more institutional care for the elderly, and the idea of a better way seems appealing given the death toll and poor performance of the sector during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Ontario government is firmly committed to the long-term care (LTC) model, with an ambitious plan to make the sector bigger and better, and to increase the level of care. The government has already committed $2.68 billion to renovate and expand LTC homes. It also has also promised $4.9 billion to increase direct nursing or personal support care to four hours a day, the highest level in the country.

In a medical records study covering thousands of children, a U.S.-Canadian team led by researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine concludes that while surgery to correct congenital heart disease (CHD) within 10 years after birth may restore young hearts to healthy function, it also may be associated with an increased risk of hypertension high blood pressure within a few months or years after surgery.
