Ontario premier defends spending $2 5 million on bracelets that beep if users get too close

TORONTO Ontario Premier Doug Ford defended his government’s decision to invest $2.5 million in wearable contact tracing technology that will beep or buzz to notify users if they are too close to another person, saying that the deal should yield a “good return on investment.” Last week, the Progressive Conservative government issued a news release saying that it will be providing money from the Ontario Together Fund to a technology company in order to create wearable tracing technology for people who work or spend time in facilities where the COVID Alert app can’t be accessed. The bracelet, called TraceSCAN, would be used in places such as airlines, schools, construction sites and long-term care homes.

February 18, 2021   ·   0 Comments By Paula Brown, Local Journalism Initiative Reporter Students and teachers in the Upper Grand District School Board (UGDSB), along with others across the province expecting a break next month will be waiting a little longer as government postpones March Break to April. Education Minister Stephen Lecce made the announcement last Thursday (Feb. 11) that the weeklong break for students and teachers, which was originally scheduled for March 15 to 19, would begin on April 12. “Postponing March Break, not cancelling it is an important way that schools can help to limit community transmission,” said Lecce. “I recognize that this is one more change in the year that has been challenging for so many students and our education staff who continue to work so hard, it is one made on the best advice of Public Health officials to keep them safe and to keep our schools open in this province.”

David Yanez, 12, says he doesn’t mind waiting for a break. (Image submitted by Javier Yanez) When he heard the news, he was disappointed at first but that feeling didn’t last. “I was kind of sad at first, but I still know it’s going to happen, so I’m excited.” David said his acting camp has been rescheduled and he hasn’t felt overwhelmed by school work, so waiting for a break isn’t the end of the world.
