COVID variants raise concern in classrooms May 7, 2021
The death of a Catholic school student in Brampton, Ont., has highlighted the demographic shift of those most affected by COVID-19.
Thirteen-year-old Emily Viegas’ April 22 death sent shockwaves through not only the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board but across the province and prompted the launch of an online fundraiser for her family that has raised over $139,000.
The board said in a statement “supports have been made available to students and staff.”
“Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to the family and all those impacted by the loss of our young student,” the statement continued, adding, “As a board and at the local school level, we continue to focus on respecting the privacy and dignity of the family and allowing them to grieve.”

Cornwall’s Todd Lalonde has been elected to a fourth term as an Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association regional director.
Lalonde, the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario chair and Cornwall/Glengarry trustee, is the director for Region 10, which includes the CDSBEO, the Algonquin and Lakeshore CDSB, and the Renfrew County CDSB.

“I’ve served in the role for three consecutive terms, and I look forward to serving for a fourth term,” Lalonde said in a CDSBEO news release.
NNDSB names new Interim Executive Officer

The Near North District School Board (NNDSB) appointed Wally Easton as the new Interim Executive Officer (IEO) on Monday.
The news comes in light of the retirement of Liz Therrien as Superintendent of Business and is effective Monday, February 1st.
On March 1st, he will transition into an Acting Senior Business Official (SBO) role while a permanent replacement is found.
Easton brings to the table experience serving as a Special Advisor to the Minister of Education, as well as six years as a policy analyst with the Ontario Catholic School Trustees’ Association.

Wally Easton will replace the Near North District School Board’s superintendent of business, Liz Therrien, according to a memo issued to staff Friday by director of education Craig Myles.

Easton, was one of two special advisors appointed by the Minister of Education in 2019 to provide recommendations on how the school board could improve in certain areas.
