From shoreline erosion to broadband access, Chatham-Kent’s delegation brought forward its key priorities during this week’s virtual Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference.
The annual event, which wrapped up Tuesday, provides a chance for municipal staff and councillors to speak with provincial ministers and other officials.

Coun. Clare Latimer called the sessions productive so far, citing the Lake Erie shoreline as an example.
“We talked about how we participated in collaboration with the Erie shoreline study and that has allowed us to identify issues that certainly we’ve all been dealing with over the past year on Erie Shore Drive and No. 3 Highway, Rose Beach Line, Thames River, Mitchell’s Bay, etc.,” she said.

The province is investing $38 million in infrastructure projects across Northern Ontario, with nearly $1 million of that sum earmarked for Timmins.
The funds are being provided through the 2021 Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund.

It will help 144 communities in the region build and repair roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure.
A number of local municipalities are receiving Provincial government funding to address their infrastructure.
The Ontario government has announced nearly $38 million to address local infrastructure in Northern Ontario through the 2021 Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF).

The funding will help 144 communities in the region build and repair roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure. These investments are part of a total allocation of $200 million for 424 small, rural and Northern communities across Ontario under OCIF.
Breaking down the numbers Kirkland Lake will receive just over $600 thousand. Larder Lake, McGarry and Matachewan will receive $50 thousand. Englehart will receive just over $64 thousand and Black River-Matheson will receive just over $90 thousand.

The province is investing $200-million in rural communities throughout Ontario. Premier Doug Ford made the announcement at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association’s conference this morning. The funding will support 424 small, rural, and Northern Ontario communities build and repair roads and bridges, and water and wastewater plants. Ford says these projects will support local businesses and create local jobs.
“COVID-19 has created challenges for everyone, including our municipal partners,” said Laurie Scott, Minister of Infrastructure. “By making this stable, predictable investment, our government is not only improving critical infrastructure, we are strengthening local economies, creating jobs and laying the foundation for our long-term recovery.”

Todd Smith, MPP for Bay of Quinte, confirmed Monday Quinte municipalities will receive more than $8.5 million through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) to address community infrastructure needs including roads, bridges, water and wastewater infrastructure.
“This funding addresses our government’s commitment to support our local municipalities in making the Bay of Quinte area the best place to live and grow. We know that projects to create and renew local infrastructure will create jobs and serve to attract economic growth and investment,” said Smith in a press release.
