More than a dozen local small businesses received grants last year to hire students to improve their online presence.
The 15 businesses shared in nearly $52,000 in funding under Ontario’s Digital Main Street Program and Student Digital Service Squads, to help them transform their businesses and expand online stores during COVID-19.

The Digital Main Street Program is a $57 million partnership between the provincial and federal government, which helps connect tech-savvy students with businesses, providing $2,500 in government grants and online training for local small businesses who need help launching and expanding their online stores while government closures remain in place. It is part of Ontario’s support for small businesses through Ontario’s Main Street Recovery Plan.
Published Friday, January 22, 2021 12:45PM EST The provincial government says it has received tens of thousands of applications for financial assistance one week after opening a portal for promised small business grants. The province said Friday that some 42,000 small businesses have already applied since the portal opened on January 15, including 10,000 applicants on the first day. Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy said at a news conference Friday that the government is working to make sure the money flows at “light speed.” “We hope to get the money in the hands of those businesses that successfully applied on Friday within days from now,” Bethlenfalvy said. “So the turnaround time is unprecedented, light speed for government.”
