The Thunder Bay District Jail remains on lockdown due to a COVID-19 outbreak among inmates there, but the facility is still being required to accept new inmates as it's the only remand centre in the region.

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at both the Thunder Bay District Jail and the Thunder Bay Correctional Centre on January 6, after an inmate that had spent time at both institutions tested positive for the respiratory disease earlier in the week.(CBC News)
After an inmate in a Thunder Bay correctional facility tested positive for COVID-19, leading to the declaration of a COVID-19 outbreak at two facilities in the city late Wednesday evening, calls for a plan to vaccinate inmates and staff at correctional facilities have grown.
However, the provincial government has been unable to provide details thus far on when or how those vaccinations may occur.

Security will be in place at all hours of the day at the North Bay Regional Health Centre’s facility on King Street West after a staff member with Nipissing Mental Health Housing and Support Services was assaulted at the complex last week.
A statement from the hospital’s manager of communications and the volunteer department, Kim McElroy, said security has been increased to 24-7 out of an abundance of caution.

She said due to higher staff numbers during the day, the hospital previously only provided security in the evening.
