Helping others through coffee
"I said to myself, wait a minute, I come from Kenya. We have very, very good coffee and Americans love coffee. I realize that Americans are willing to pay $3 or $4 for a cup of coffee," Kabuki said. "And back home, the coffee growers are very, very poor because they get paid just a tiny bit of that amount. So I decided that I'm going to start a company where the coffee growers are getting paid more money."
Starting slowly in Jacksonville more than a decade ago, Kabuki and Gikunju moved to St. Augustine and are now importing four shipping containers a year of raw coffee beans directly from farmers in small villages in Kenya in the area where they grew up. Then they roast, grind and package it for sale.

Gowan says the first show after the break was an emotional experience on more than one level. “Getting back onstage and playing with the other guys, looking eyeball-to-eyeball with them again, that really got me up the spine,” he explains. “There was that feeling of, We’re doing this for us again and isn’t it great that we have a sea of a couple of thousand smiling faces looking back at us?
“I had anticipated it would be the opposite - that it would be the sea of faces that would hit me the hardest, and the band would be secondary to that. But it was more the joy of making music together that really highlighted the moment for me.”
