Snuck in at the end of this week, the International Criminal Court (ICC) suddenly said it had ruled that it did have jurisdiction over the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). It effectively greenlights a formal investigation into alleged war crimes committed by Israelis and Palestinians, including the Israeli army and Palestinian militant group Hamas. The ICC’s chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, said she would now examine the 2014 Gaza war between Israel and militant groups in Hamas-controlled Gaza; the 2018 Gaza border protests; and Israeli settlements in occupied territory.

In his first briefing to the Security Council, on Tuesday, the UN envoy said Palestinian elections scheduled for later this year will be a crucial step towards unity in the region.  Earlier this month, Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, issued a decree announcing parliamentary and presidential elections will be held starting in May, marking the first vote across the Occupied Territories in 15 years.

British Consul General welcomes the allocation of coronavirus vaccines to the occupied territories JERUSALEM, Wednesday, February 03, 2021 (WAFA) – The British Consul General, Philip Hall, welcomed today’s announcement by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, that a first indicative allocation of 240,000 doses of the Oxford / AstraZeneca and 37,440 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines has been made to the occupied Palestinian territories. Coronavirus is a terrible disease which does not respect borders. No one is safe until we are all safe, said the Consul General in a statement. The United Kingdom has pledged ₤1.3 billion of UK aid to end the coronavirus pandemic as quickly as possible, and has provided protective and other equipment and training in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.
