The summer school aims to assist professionals in developing a coherent understanding of the legal and human rights situation in the OPT while closely studying the application of international law. The summer school offers lectures by human rights professionals, civil society organizations and human rights groups on key human rights issues and trends of violations witnessed in the OPT. This year the program will take place online and sessions will run morning to afternoon in English, and in accordance with Jerusalem time zone.
Al-Haq’s summer school is a unique opportunity for professionals interested in the Palestinian context, the history and the future of the OPT and includes virtual field visits to a diverse number of locations, giving participants a chance to see and hear firsthand accounts of violations committed by different state and non-state actors.
Thank you Mr President, and my thanks to Special Coordinator Wennesland for his briefing.
Let me open today by welcoming the decision taken on 7 April by the United States to restore funding to the Palestinian people and to UNRWA. This move will improve the lives of thousands of Palestinians, particularly those hit hardest by the occupation and COVID-19. Secretary Blinken said on 2 April that Israelis and Palestinians should enjoy equal measures of freedom, security, prosperity and democracy. These are sentiments with which the United Kingdom readily agrees.
It is our hope that positive moves such as these will help to build an atmosphere of trust between the parties. The United Kingdom will continue to encourage deeper cooperation on economic issues, and will work with the parties, and our international partners, to push for the re-establishment of formal Israeli-Palestinian mechanisms, such as the Joint Economic Committee and its sub-committees.

In this session we examined the situation in the Gaza Strip, including how the Gaza Strip came to be isolated from the West Bank and besieged by Israel, the role of Hamas and related Palestinian political dynamics, and the humanitarian situation in light of repeated Israeli military campaigns, more than a decade of blockade, and now COVID.
Part 5 – Palestinian Refugees and the Role of UNRWA
Featuring:
Gwyn Lewis (UNRWA),
Diba Abu Nejila (humanitarian professional)
In this session we focused on Palestinian refugees – one of the core issues of the conflict and which under the Olso Accords was to be resolved in the context of permanent status talks between Israelis and Palestinians. We will examine how Palestinians became refugees, the role and development of UNRWA as the organization responsible for Palestinian refugees, and the debate around the continued status of many Palestinians as refugees today.
