Legal experts warn that the Trump administration’s latest attempt to equate boycotts towards Israel with anti-Semitism is part of a years-long push to criminalize any public debate or criticism of Israel in the United States and abroad. Their concern comes after US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the US plans to label the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) Movement for Palestinian rights as “anti-Semitic” and curtail funding for groups that support it. (1) Palestinians and human rights activists claim the measure aims to stifle advocacy for Palestinian rights, and that it is another step and a much larger and broader assault on a human rights movement globally which appears to be working in ending Israeli apartheid against Palestinians.

A report published by the United Nations in 2018 stated that by the year 2020 the Gaza Strip would be uninhabitable. It said specifically that, “the United Nations has stated that Gaza may well be unlivable by 2020.” The report emphasized also that “Michael Lynk, Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories Occupied Since 1967, drew attention to Israel’s persistent non-cooperation with the Special Rapporteur’s mandate. As with his two predecessors, Israel has not granted him entry to visit the country, nor the Occupied Palestinian territory.” Anyone who thinks that the Gaza Strip was liveable prior to 2020 is out of their mind.

The United Nations official on Middle East peace updated the Security Council today on developments in the region, highlighting continued violence, including against civilians and children, as well as Israel’s ongoing settlement-related activity in the occupied West Bank.
Briefing via videoconference, Nickolay Mladenov, Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, emphasized that the global community “must persevere in its efforts to prevent violent escalation in the region and encourage leaders on both sides to takes steps towards enabling a return to negotiations, not a retrenchment of conflict”.
