US has surplus of COVID-19 vaccine jabs, but few takers

Washington: The first incentives were relatively modest: doughnuts, hunting licenses, baseball tickets. And cheeseburgers. Beer. Whiskey. Maybe even a savings bond, enough to buy a nice toaster someday. The United States has a surplus of coronavirus vaccine doses on its hands, and long gone are the days when people waited hours to get jabbed. Dwindling demand has forced governors and mayors to get creative. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, tried to market the vaccines by offering burgers and fries from Shake Shack, which he dutifully, awkwardly ate on camera while trying to keep a straight face. Now, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, has upped the ante. He’s offering $1 million to five adults, provided they are vaccinated. That’s $1 million each.

Here s How Some States Are Incentivizing Residents to Get Vaccinated

Joe Raedle/Getty Images Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan announced on Thursday that any Maryland resident who gets a COVID-19 vaccine is eligible to receive a lottery prize of up to $400,000. All you have to do to enter is get your shot, Hogan said.  Every day for 40 days, starting May 25, the Maryland Lottery will give away a $40,000 prize to someone who is vaccinated as part of its VaxCash Promotion, and on July 4 the final day of the drawing one lucky resident will win $400,000.  Any Maryland resident that has been vaccinated will automatically be registered for a chance to win the promotion, and Hogan said that a total of $2 million will be given away, using funds from the lottery s marketing budget.
