Understanding China EJINSIGHT - ejinsight com

A few weeks ago, the Democratic Party established – a historic first – a committee that is designated as facilitating the party’s understanding of Hong Kong’s relationship with the Mainland. This is a pivotal step that ought to be celebrated – not because of its ostensible “political correctness”; in fact, ‘tis precisely because by all metrics, it isn’t politically correct. It isn’t politically correct these days for members of the opposition to “get to know” China. The epistemic arrogance embedded in certain circles would have the Establishment claim and frame understanding of China as a privilege exclusive to solely those aligned with the pro-Beijing bloc – after all, ‘tis part and parcel of an Establishment politico’s career to claim/feign/allege that they are incredibly clued in about Beijing (except, they’re not!).

Save India, and save us all EJINSIGHT - ejinsight com

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a truly dire toll on India. The sights are abhorrent to behold. 4,000+ daily deaths, 400,000+ daily cases, with the actual numbers likely to be in the ballpark of 10, even 20, times of these numbers. It’s not looking good for the country. Oxygen in short supply, vaccines under- and ill-delivered, and hospitals running out of beds. I could go on and on, but you get the point. There is the view – one that is odiously popular amongst certain circles I’ve been acquainted with (unfortunately) – that posits that what’s going in India is a matter of its people’s own doing. More cynically, the argument goes, we should leave India be, and have Indian citizens bear the brunt of their government’s mismanagement – after all, it’s a dog-eat-dog world out there, and Malthus could well have had a point… or so, the hypothesis claims.

Addressing Hongkongers vaccine hesitancy EJINSIGHT

Vaccinations are not going well in Hong Kong. Uptake is extraordinarily slow – especially as compared with other developed countries or regions. Israel, for one, has a population 1.5 million more than Hong Kong’s, and a vaccination rate of nearly 60% (as of the end of April 21, 2021). In contrast, only a little over 1 in 10 of Hong Kong’s citizens had received at least a dose by the same date. Setting aside concerns pertaining to allergy and/or legitimate reasons for vaccine exemption, it is apparent that the vaccination drive is going poorly – and, as much as we’re all enamoured by the prospects of a Singapore-Hong Kong travel bubble, the touting and talk of the bubble seem as good a pledge as that of “Business as usual” in Hong Kong politics: not very.

In defense of Nomads EJINSIGHT - ejinsight com

Nomadland reveals an America driven apart by sociocultural divides, economic downturn, and the crumbling of communities and neighbourhoods under the weight of gentrification and political polarisation. It is as much an invigorated indictment, as a poignant reflection upon what it means to be a citizen – what it means to be free; what it means to have a Home. Indeed, at times like these, when Home is less of a constant than it ever has been in our history, the movie’s aftertaste is bittersweet – bitter in its stark depiction of a cruel yet truthful reality; sweet, in that it leaves us pondering what it means to exist, to thrive, to have a home beyond a roof.
